KIEV: The Ukrainian Orthodox Patriarch Filaret warned Wednesday that continued violence in Kiev could lead to a civil conflict and called on the government to sign a pact with the European Union.

 KIEV, Ukraine — After helmeted riot police stormed Independence Square here early Saturday, spraying tear gas, throwing stun grenades and swinging truncheons, dozens of young protesters ran, terrified, scattering up the streets. It was after 4:30 a.m., the air cold, the sky black. As they got their bearings, the half-lit bell tower of St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery beckoned.

Tensions in the Ukrainian capital are not abating. The failure of the no-confidence motion on Tuesday pushed the euro integration supporters back to the streets. Hundreds of demonstrators blocked the government headquarters calling for the resignation of President Yanukovich and Prime Minister Azarov. Meanwhile reports have emerged Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs troops currently stationed in the Crimea are being transported to Kiev. Christoph Hörstel, a Government Consultant and Publicist in Germany, spoke to the Voice of Russia about the evolving crisis.

What is your personal stance on the Ukrainian issue?
To me it is quite obvious that through enormous use of secret service power again western countries tried to fabricate a regime change in Ukraine and unfortunately I have to say that I think German government is very much helpful in this regard.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that riots in Kiev have no direct relation to Ukraine and the EU deal, but rather it's an attempt by the opposition to undermine the country's legitimate government.

It looks as if protesters in Ukraine can topple the government, and it's not clear whether the president has the stomach or the intellect to control the situation there, Mark Almond, an Oxford University historian, told RT.
Almond believes that these protests are part of Ukraine's economic difficulties.

Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery in Kiev, Ukraine. Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1015 the Lavra has been a preeminent center of the Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. Together with the Saint-Sophia Cathedral, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine on August 21, 2007, based on voting by experts and the community.

UKRAINE: Christmas Dream Land (PHOTO STORY)

 

The two-day winter festival "Krayina Mriy Rіzdvyana-2013" (Dream Land. Christmas version) was organized by singer Oleh Skrypka. The Jan. 7-8 event takes place at Kyiv's Mamaeva Sloboda, an outdoor ethnic museum designed as a traditional Cossack village. The Vertep (Christmas play) performance includes folk music, cossack dancing, workshops in traditional crafts, entertainment for children and adults and food prepared outdoors to create a Christmas atmosphere amid the chill.

Трагедия произошла вечером около собора

47-летний настоятель Троицкого собора Украинской православной церкви Московского патриархата архимандрит Трифиллий (Галан) был убит вечером 12 декабря на улице Троицкой в Сумах.
Об этом сообщила руководитель центра общественных связей Управления внутренних дел в области Эльвира Биганова.
"Причина смерти - огнестрельные ранения в область грудной клетки", - уточнила она.
По словам Бигановой, около 19.40 на ул. Троицкой возле Троицкого собора инспектор патрульно-постовой службы обнаружил труп неизвестного мужчины и сообщил об этом в городской отдел милиции.
Следственно-оперативная группа установила, что убитый - настоятель собора.
Сумская епархия УПЦ МП подтвердила гибель Трифиллия.
"12 декабря трагически погиб клирик Сумской епархии УПЦ МП, настоятель Троицкого собора Сум архимандрит Трифиллий (Галан). Священник был найден убитым около храма, в котором он служил. Да упокоит Всемилостивый Господь душу новопреставленного убиенного раба Божия архимандрита Трифиллия в Царствии Небесном", - говорится в сообщении, размещенном на интернет-сайте епархии.
Проводятся следственные действия.
Милиция обратилась к местным жителям с просьбой помочь найти свидетелей преступления.
