Earthquake in Thessaloniki Hits 4.4 on the Richter Scale

 

Early this morning, an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude shook the wider region of Volvi, but was particularly felt in Thessaloniki.

According to the Athens Institute of Geodynamics, the earthquake occurred at 8.15 in the morning, 40 km east of Thessaloniki and its focal depth was 10 km. It is not yet known whether there are damages resulting from the earthquake. The first statements of the seismologist Mr. Eftymios Lekkas were quite reassuring. He stressed that the region of Volvi, where the epicenter was, is known for its seismic activity and that this phenomenon is being closely monitored. It cannot yet be determined whether it was a main earthquake or a pre-earthquake. According to the seismologist Mr. Gerasimos Chouliaras, there were a few consecutive earthquakes- the first was a bigger one followed by two smaller earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.2. This shows sequence and it merits particular attention.
