Organised Albanian crime destabilizing Greece and Balkans

A new report links rising Albanian nationalism with organized Albanian crime in Greece. The report states that organized crime controlled by the Albanian mafia is a destabilizing force in Greece.
The Albanian mafia controls about 80 percent of the retail distribution of heroin in Greece; about 50 percent of armed robberies in houses, shops-businesses were committed by Albanians; controls 90 percent of the import of illegal light weapons in the country (Kalashnikov, Makarov, grenades); and controls 50 percent of human trafficking.
Albanian organized crime accounts for several billions of euros in black funds, though notably the mafia heads do not operate in Greece, instead using trustees. The report states the mafia "have the ability to mobilize hundreds of rugged Albanians in Greece for any reason that will make a profit or if 'forced' because of international pressure." Most significantly the report draws links between rising Albanian nationalism that focuses on a "Greater Albania" and organized crime.
RIEAS reports that a confidential police report reveals 42 Albanian criminal organizations operate in Greece. It states "3,000 Albanian criminals are active in the transportation and distribution of cannabis and heroin, while 2,500 Albanians are arrested each year in Greece for robberies, thefts and burglaries." Sources from the Citizen’s Protection Ministry "estimate that 3,000 Albanians who live in Greece (many legally) own AK-47 rifles and unknown quantities of ammunition."
The combination of reports shows an increasing trend of funds acquired through organized Albanian crime in Greece financing extremist Albanian groups throughout the Balkans.

Organ donations fall in Germany after scandal

BERLIN (AP) — Organ donations have dropped sharply in Germany following a scandal over alleged corruption at several transplant clinics.
The German Foundation for Organ Transplantation says the number of organs donated fell almost 13 percent to 3,917 last year, the lowest figure in a decade.
Several German clinics are being investigated over allegations that doctors manipulated waiting lists to help some patients appear sicker than they were and so receive transplants sooner.
The foundation said Monday that the scandal had "massively shaken" the public's faith in thetransplant system.
Some 12,000 people in Germany require organ transplants each year.

THE Swiss and Italian governments will split evenly €13.8m confiscated from an organised crime group

THE Swiss and Italian governments will split evenly €13.8m confiscated from an organised crime group based in southern Italy, the two said on Monday.
The Federal Department of Justice in Switzerland said that in 2001 a southern Italian court asked the Swiss authorities for help in criminal proceedings against an unnamed money laundering suspect, and the Swiss froze the money in the same year.
The suspect, named by the Italian Ministry of Justice as Ciro Giordano, was accused of laundering money for the Camorra, the organised crime group based in the Campania region of Italy.
The Italian authorities said Giordano acted for the Casalesi clan that controls a swathe of territory north of Naples.
The clan inspired Roberto Saviano’s best-selling book "Gomorrah: Italy’s Other Mafia", which became a prize-winning film.
Switzerland’s justice department said the Camorra assets were seized from a bank in the border city of Lugano. Swiss and Italian authorities declined to name the bank.

India: A year after her death - RC nun murdered by the coal mafia

Catholic nun with a Mass and a meeting. A fellow member of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary spoke about Sister Valsa's "growing isolation" from "Church and congregation". The nun was advocate for the rights of Santal Tribals in the area of Dumka (Jharkand).

New Delhi - The "ultimate sacrifice" of Sister Valsa, murdered by the coal mafia, has breathed "new meaning" into spirituality and the "apostolate," said Sister Shalini Mulackal as she talked about the Catholic nun killed a year ago for her steadfast defence of Santal Tribals in Dumka (Jharkand).

On the first anniversary of her death, Mgr Vincent Concessao, archbishop of New Delhi, celebrated a Memorial Mass on 24 November in the city's Sacred Heart Cathedral. Before the liturgy, the prelate moderated a meeting on the topic of "Being a Prophet in India Today - Our Master's Way" in memory of the slain Sister of Charity of Jesus and Mary.

Originally from Kerala, Sister Valsa John was shot in cold blood during the night of 15 November 2011. To this day, her murder remains unsolved. Initially, police thought Maoist rebels were involved. However, many people thought from the start that the local coal mafia had been behind the assassination.

For more than 20 years, the nun dedicated her life to Santal Tribals in the Dumka area, fighting for their rights against land grabs by the powerful coal lobby.

At the start of the meeting, a video was screened showing the mission Sister Valsa pursued until the day of her murder. Afterwards, Sister Mary Scaria talked about some of the moments in the life of her fellow nun, especially her relations to local communities and the repeated threats made by local organised crime groups. At the same time, the nun expressed her pain over the "growing isolation" in which Sister Valsa was left, "by the Church and her congregation".

The meeting was organised by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) Office for Women, the People's Initiative for Legal Literacy and Research (Pillar), Media House, the All India Catholic Union, the All India Christian Council and Sadbhavana.
