Muslims Angry Over Spanish Citizenship for Jews

Muslims are now demanding reciprocity, demanding that the Spanish government grant automatic citizenship to millions of descendants of Muslims who were also expelled from Spain in the Middle Ages.

North Africa converts to Islam invasions into Spain

The Spanish government has announced that it will grant automatic citizenship to Jews of Sephardic descent, whose ancestors were expelled from Spain in 1492.
The measure has been welcomed by Jewish groups, who say the move is long overdue and that it rights a historic wrong.

But Muslim groups are now clamoring for reciprocity, and are demanding that the Spanish government grant instant citizenship to millions of descendants of Muslims who were also expelled from Spain during the Middle Ages.

The so-called Right of Return for Sephardic Jews (Sepharad means Spain in Hebrew) was announced in Madrid on November 22 by the Spanish Justice Minister, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, and the Foreign Minister, José Manuel García-Margallo.

Under existing Spanish law, Sephardic Jews already benefit from a preferential naturalization procedure that allows them to claim Spanish citizenship after having lived in Spain for only two years, a privilege that is also available to citizens of Spain's former colonies in Latin America and elsewhere.

The change means that Sephardic Jews -- wherever they live in the diaspora -- will have to present an accreditation from the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities (FCJE), a Jewish umbrella group, confirming their ancestry to claim a Spanish passport.

Spain's offer applies only to those who identify themselves as Jewish. It does not apply to Sephardic Anousim(anousim in Hebrew means "coerced"), the descendants of Jews who were compelled by the Spanish Inquisition to convert to Roman Catholicism (they are sometimes also called crypto-Jews or Marranos). Secular anousimmust seek religious training from the FCJE and undergo formal conversion to Judaism before they can obtain Spanish citizenship.

The Spanish government has not said how many Jews it expects will apply for citizenship (a total of 698 Sephardic Jews obtained Spanish citizenship during the period 2006-2010). There are an estimated three million Sephardic Jews around the world today. Most live in Israel, the United States, Belgium, Greece, France and Turkey, but there are also sizeable communities in Latin America, especially in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Venezuela.
No more than 45,000 Jews currently live in Spain -- out of a total Spanish population of 47 million -- which is only a fraction of the number of Jews who lived in the country before 1492, when Jews were forced to convert to Roman Catholicism or go into exile.

The Edict of Expulsion, issued on March 31, 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain (Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon), and also known as the Alhambra Decree, ordered Jews to leave the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, and their territories and possessions, by July 31 of that same year.

Up to 800,000 Jews are believed to have left Spain as a result of the decree. Another 50,000 chose to avoid expulsion by converting to Roman Catholicism.
Spain first began granting citizenship to Sephardic Jews -- on an individual basis, not en masse -- in 1988, when the government of Felipe González modified the Spanish Civil Code. The concessions were halted in 2009 by the Socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, but the procedure has now been revived and amended by the conservative government of Mariano Rajoy.

Reacting to the Rajoy government's pledge to expedite the naturalization process for Sephardic Jews, Isaac Querub, the president of the FCJE, declared that November 22, 2012 would "pass into history as a day of clear blue sky and intense luminosity."
For his part, Foreign Minister García-Margallo emphasized the historic links of the Jewish people with Spain. At a ceremony at the Centro Sefarad-Israel in Madrid, he said: "Our relations have never been forgotten and have intensified the more tolerant and democratic Spain has become."

But Spanish political commentators have been speculating about both the reason and the timing behind the government's move.
Just one week after announcing the Right of Return for Sephardic Jews, Spain voted in favor of upgrading the status of the Palestinian Authority at the United Nations. The November 29 vote was a major blow to Israel; some commentators have speculated that Spanish government announced the citizenship measure as a "gesture" to minimize the impact on bilateral relations.

Others say the Spanish government is seeking to attract Jews as a way help remedy the country's severe economic problems. Just days before welcoming Sephardic Jews back to Spain, the government announced on November 19 that it would offer residency permits (the equivalent of a US green card) to foreigners who buy houses priced at more than 160,000 euros ($200,000) as part of its efforts to revive a collapsed real estate market and divest itself of hundreds of thousands of unsold homes.

Meanwhile, Muslims are now demanding that the Spanish government grant automatic citizenship to millions of descendants of Muslims who were expelled from Spain in the seventeenth century.

Much of the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by Muslim conquerors known as the Moors from 711 until 1492, when the Moorish Kingdom of Granada surrendered to Ferdinand and Isabella. But the final Muslim expulsion from Granada, known in Arabic as Al-Andalus, did not take place until over a century later, beginning in 1609, when King Philip III decreed the Expulsion of the Moriscos.

The Moriscos were the descendants of the Muslim population that converted to Roman Catholicism under threat of exile from Ferdinand and Isabella in 1502. From 1609 through 1614, the Spanish government systematically forced an estimated 350,000 Moriscos to leave Spain for Muslim North Africa.

Today there are an estimated 5 million descendants of the Moriscos living in Morocco alone; there are millions more living in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Tunisia and Turkey.

In a December 3 essay published by the Morocco-based newspaper Correo Diplomático, the Moroccan journalist Ahmed Bensalh Es-salhi wrote that the "decision to grant Spanish citizenship to the grandchildren of the Hebrews in Spain in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, while ignoring the Moriscos, the grandsons of the Muslims, is without doubt, flagrant segregation and unquestionable discrimination, as both communities suffered equally in Spain at that time. The decision could also be considered by the international community to be an historic act of absolute immorality and injustice…This decision is absolutely disgraceful and dishonorable."

Bensalh then went on to threaten Spain: "Is Spain aware of what might be assumed when it makes peace with some and not with others? Is Spain aware of what this decision could cost? Has Spain considered that it could jeopardize the massive investments that Muslims have made on its territory? Does Spain have alternatives to the foreign investment from Muslims if they ever decide to move that capital to other destinations due to the discrimination against Muslims?"

Bensalh's article is the latest salvo in an escalating battle being waged by Muslim historians and academics who are demanding that Spain treat Moriscos the same way it treats Sephardic Jews.

In a letter addressed to Juan Carlos, Al-Ahmar calls for a "full legal and historical investigation of the war crimes that were perpetrated on the Muslim population of Andalusia by the French, English, European and papal crusaders, whose victims were our poor miserable people, after the collapse of Islamic rule in Andalusia."
The letter speaks of "the injustice inflicted on the Muslim population of Andalusia who are still suffering in the diaspora in exile since 1492."

Al-Ahmar wants the Spanish monarch to apologize "on behalf of his ancestors" and to assume "responsibility for the consequences" that this would entail. He says it is necessary "to identify criminals, to convict retroactively, while at the same time to identify and compensate victims for their calamities and restore their titles." This process would culminate with "a decree that allows immigrants to return to their homes in Andalusia, and grant them full citizenship rights and restoration of all their properties."

EGYPT: Muhammad Morsi - Christians Should "Convert, Pay Tribute, or Leave"

"They need to know that conquest is coming, that Egypt will be Islamic, and that they must pay jizya or emigrate," Morsi reportedly said.

According to the popular Egyptian website, El Bashayer, Muhammad Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood presidential candidate, just declared that he will "achieve the Islamic conquest (fath) of Egypt for the second time, and make all Christians convert to Islam, or else pay the jizya," the additional Islamic tax, or financial tribute, required of non-Muslims, or financial tribute.

In a brief report written by Samuel al-Ashay and published by El Bashayer on May 27, Morsi allegedly made these comments while speaking with a journalist at the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, adding "We will not allow Ahmed Shafiq [his contending presidential candidate] or anyone else to impede our second Islamic conquest of Egypt."

After his interviewer pointed out that the first Muslim conquest of Egypt was "carried out at the hands of Amr bin al-As [in 641]," he asked Morsi, "Who will the second Islamic conqueror be?" Morsi, replied, "The second Muslim conqueror will be Muhammad Morsi," referring to himself, "and history will record it."

When asked what he thought about many Christian Copts coming out to vote for his secular opponent, Ahmed Shafiq, Morsi reportedly said, "They need to know that conquest is coming, and Egypt will be Islamic, and that they must pay jizya or emigrate."

If this interview is accurate, certainly Morsi would not be the first political Islamist in Egypt to say he wants to see the nation's Christians subjugated and made to pay jizya (see here for more examples).

However, considering that the English language media are currently reporting that Morsi is trying to woo Egypt's Christians and women to win more votes, it is difficult to imagine that he actually made those comments: one does not doubt that he favors the idea of a "second Islamic conquest" and the subjugation of Christians; one doubts that he would be so foolish as to reveal his mind now, publicly, and thereby jeopardize his chances of winning the presidency.

Then again, his remarks are reported in the context of a private meeting at the headquarters of the Brotherhood's political party. Perhaps Morsi thought he was speaking to a fellow Islamist who would not expose him? Perhaps he was frustrated at having to win Copts over and was "venting"? Stay tuned.

NZ's largest Xmas dinner

A merry crowd of 2800 people filled the tables at the Viaduct Events Centre today for the Auckland City Mission's annual Christmas dinner.

Another 150 who could not get in were fed a packaged roast dinner on picnic tables outside.
City Missioner Diane Robertson said the 550 volunteers made for two days of food preparation a "well oiled machine. It was absolutely smooth sailing and staff did a brilliant job."
She said there were some new faces among the families who came in previous years.
The mission also brought along its clients who were homeless or in support programmes for drug and alcohol problems.
Cooking by volunteers began at 6am and other came to decorate the tables with balloons, crackers and gifts to be distributed after the meal by Santa and helpers.
After an hour of entertainment the first course was brought out - roast chicken or ham, with gravy and roast kumara, gourmet potatoes, beans and carrots.
Dessert was icecream, jelly and fruit and cake.
The event is New Zealand largest Christmas lunch.
This month the mission has been trying to raise $900,000 for running Christmas activities, including distributing food hampers and 25,000 presents to low-income families in Auckland.

Two Muslim candidates win seats in Belgium local elections

File photo shows veiled women holding signs during a protest by Muslim men and women in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek (Molenbeek-Saint-Jean), in Brussels.

Two candidates from Islam Party have won their way to the local councils in two major districts of the Belgian capital Brussels.

The local elections were held in Anderlecht and Molenbeek on Sunday.

The party reportedly plans to field candidates for the regional and parliamentary elections and also intends to fight for seats in the European Parliament.
The results have been hailed as a new era for the Muslim community in Belgium.

On April 26, The London-based human rights group Amnesty International criticized politicians for failing to act against the growth of Islamophobia in Europe in a report entitled "Choice and Prejudice," focusing on the rise of political movements that target Muslims or Muslim practices in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.

A 2008 estimation showed that 6 percent of the Belgian population, about 628,751, is Muslim. Muslims construct 25.5% of the population of Brussels, 4.0% of Wallonia and 3.9% of Flanders.

US deploying troops to 35 African countries

The United States Army will be deploying troops to nearly three-dozen African nations in the coming year.

Soldiers based out of Fort Riley, Kansas’ 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division will begin training in March 2013 in order to prepare for a project that will send troops to as many as 35 African nations, the Associated Press reports.
Citing a growing threat from extremist groups, including those with ties to al-Qaeda, the Department of Defense (DoD) is hoping to install American soldiers overseas in order to prepare local troops there for any future crises as tensions escalate.
Earlier this month, DoD sources with insider knowledge told the Washington Post that US troops will soon be en route to the nation of Mali in order to thwart the emerging threat of Islamic extremists, including al-Qaeda aligned insurgents. With the latest news from the Pentagon, though, Mali will be just one of many African nations hosting US troops in the coming year.
According to the AP’s update this week, soldiers will be sent overseas in the new year to assist only with training and equipping efforts, and are not necessarily permitted to participate in military operations. Should the Pentagon ask the troops to engage in battle, however, the secretary of defense could sign off on an order that would allow as much.

“If they want them for (military) operations, the brigade is our first sourcing solution because they’re prepared,” Gen. David Rodriguez, the head of U.S. Army Forces Command, tells the AP. “But that has to go back to the secretary of defense to get an execute order.”
Additionally, the AP says that US troops will head specifically to Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger in order to prepare for any advances from al-Qaeda linked groups. Americans will also train and equip forces in Kenya and Somalia, reportedly, in order to stand up to al-Shabab militants. Despite the troops being deployed to more than half of the countries in Africa, though, the AP reports that Uncle Sam will try to avoid giving the impression that the United States is leaving a substantial footprint across the continent.

British Olympic hero held as suspected terrorist by US customs

Mo Farah, a British citizen who won two gold medals for running during London 2012 was held by US customs when leaving the country to see his family for Christmas, as they suspected he might be a terrorist, because he was born in Somalia.

Farah, a British Olympic hero who has been awarded a CBE by the Queen, was detained for questioning in the US after border officials saw he was born in Somalia.
A CBE stands for Most Excellent Oder of the British Empire and means the person it is awarded to can be called “sir” or “dame”. It is awarded to people who have done something remarkable for the UK, in any profession or walk of life.
Farah, who won the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at London 2012, came to Britain from Somalia with his British born father as a child.
29 year old Farah moved to Portland in the northwestern US state of Oregon last year to work with his coach Alberto Salazar at Nike’s HQ. He was travelling back to spend Christmas with his wife and children. But even after presenting the overzealous officials with his two gold medals didn’t help his cause.
“I couldn’t believe it. Because of my Somali origin I get detained every time I come through US customs. This time I even got my medals out to show who I am, but they wouldn’t have it,” he told the UK newspaper the Sun.
Farah had similar problems with US customs when he tried to get a residency permit to live in Portland. Along with his family he visited Portland as a tourist, before they exited the country to go to Toronto in Canada, only then returning again as authorized residents.
When they returned they were told they were under investigation as a terrorist threat.
“Nike signed it all off and we thought it was going to be straight forward. But when we got there we got a letter telling us we were under investigation as a terrorist threat and we would have to stay away for 90 days,” Farah said.
In desperation he got in touch with Coach Alberto Salazar.
“As luck would have it Alberto has a friend who works for the FBI. This guy happens to be a massive running fan, knew exactly who I was and got it sorted then and there,” said Mo.
The New Year honors award comes after his double Olympic gold and public popularity failed to get him into the top three of the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.
“I suppose it is a difficult one to get my head round but it doesn’t upset me. It’s because each and every person in the lineup deserved to win, it was such a strong year and Bradley Wiggins is a phenomenal athlete,” said Farah in reference to the cycling superstar who came top in the BBC’s award.
But he was ecstatic at being awarded a CBE, “I’m blown away, so honored,” he said

SWITZERLAND: Safe haven? Prosecutors have opened a number of cases linked to Switzerland

Switzerland has taken a major step forward in tracking suspected war criminals with the creation of a special task force this year, campaigners say. Prosecutors have opened a number of cases linked to Switzerland.
Erwin Sperisen, the former head of Guatemala’s police force, is being held in Geneva where he is under investigation accused of human rights abuses.
ex-Guatamalan police chief Erwin Sperisen

They are homing in on two figures in particular: Khaled Nezzar, the former Algerian defence minister suspected of alleged civil war offences, and ex-Guatamalan police chief Erwin Sperisen, accused of human rights abuses.

“Switzerland is finally taking its international obligations more seriously,” said Trial director Philip Grant.
The legal requirement that the accused has close ties to Switzerland – family or secondary residence – were dropped, so now anyone accused of serious war crimes who travels to Switzerland or plans to travel here can be subject to a criminal investigation.

Swiss-Guatemalan

The Nezzar affair is not the only high-profile case in the public eye.

Sperisen, the former head of Guatemala’s police force from 2004 to 2007, and a Swiss-Guatemalan dual national, was arrested on August 31 in Geneva, where he had been living with his family since 2007, on suspicion of involvement in extra-judicial killings and other human rights abuses in the Central American country.
The ex-police chief, who vehemently denies the accusations, spent Christmas in Geneva’s Champ-Dollon prison, where he is being held in custody until February 26 amid on-going investigations.
A warrant for his arrest was issued in Guatemala in August 2010, along with that of 18 other former officials, including the former interior minister, Carlos Vielmann, who fled to Spain, and deputy director of police investigations Javier Figueroa, who was granted refugee status in Austria.

“Eventually there might be three trials running at the same time in three different countries and possibly others in Guatemala,” said Grant. The first “victim” of the new changes is Nezzar. The former Algerian defence minister travelled to Geneva in October last year for medical treatment.

Difficult Algerian case

Accused by Trial and two victims of serious international crimes, the 75-year-old was detained by Geneva’s justice authorities for questioning before later being released. He is reportedly now back in Algeria.
Last month the Swiss Federal Court rejected Nezzar’s claim that he could not be tried outside his country for crimes he allegedly committed during Algeria’s bloody civil war in the 1990s.
The historic decision from Switzerland’s highest court in theory clears the way for Nezzar to be tried in Switzerland. Swiss prosecutors now have the extremely complex task of gathering sufficient evidence where the alleged crimes were committed to present a case.
“There will never be cooperation from the Algerian authorities so it’s a very difficult case,” said Grant. “More and more victims are talking and willing to testify. You see their videos on Youtube, for example, but how do you access these people?
So how many other suspected war criminals actually live in or pass through Switzerland?
“It’s impossible to answer that as there are no statistics on the question,” declared Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Jeannette Balmer.
But the new war crimes unit is not idle. It is currently handling eight cases linked to Switzerland involving foreign nationals, but only two are living here, added Balmer. These concern events in former Yugoslavia, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Trial independently gathers information on specific cases from NGOs, diaspora victims’ groups or even private detectives, which it then hands over to the investigating authorities. Grant said the NGO had unearthed six cases but “we are only scratching the surface”.
He said experts had recently interviewed victims in a undisclosed country who had all pointed to “overwhelming” numbers of suspected war crime offenders living in Switzerland, Italy, France and Britain.

International cooperation has also improved but agencies in different countries need to be better connected to share information, said Grant.
“Once it is accepted that there is a shared responsibility by states, politicians will have to give their investigations the necessary resources and in the next ten to 20 years this [kind of work] will develop into something that is widely accepted,” he concluded.

St Basil the Great - New Beginnings Make New Endings

I had wasted much time on follies and spent nearly all of my youth in vain labors, and devotion to the teachings of a wisdom that God had made foolish. Suddenly, I awoke as out of a deep sleep. I beheld the wonderful light of the Gospel truth, and I recognized the nothingness of the wisdom of the princes of this world.

"Big Ben" is actually the name of the Great Bell inside of the Clock Tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, which houses the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The Clock Tower -- which is also called Big Ben -- houses four quarter bells. Thus, there are five bells in all inside the Clock Tower.

2012: 105,000 CHRISTIANS HAVE DIED FOR THEIR FAITH

According to statistics gathered by the Catholic Church, during the year 2012 around 105,000 Christians have died all over the world for their faith. This information was announced by the coordinator of the Observation Commission for Religious Freedom in Italy, Massimo Introvigne, Sedmizta.ru reported Friday.

The statistics provided by this expert are truly alarming—on the average, every five minutes a person dies in the world because he is a follower of Christ.

The researcher distinguished the most dangerous territories, which are for the most part located on the African continent: Nigeria, Somalia, and Mali, where people are plain afraid to come to church. Great risks also exist in Pakistan, certain regions of Egypt, countries where totalitarian communist regimes still exist today with North Korea at the fore, or countries that are in part under the influence of ethnic nationalists, such as India.

As for the causes of hatred toward Christians, the expert noted first of all the rule of aggressive ideologies “One one hand there are cruel persecutions, murders, and torture proceeding from specific ideologies; for example, the ideology of Islamic radical fundamentalism, the more aggressive versions of ethnic nationalism, and the old communist ideologies. There is also a difference between manifestations of intolerance as a given in certain cultures, and discrimination based on unjust legal actions, which we can see even Western countries, as the Pope of Rome noted in his Encyclical for Peace Day 2013,” noted Massimo Introvigne.

The expert also emphasized that the several days ago the Pope spoke to members of the Roman Curate that there is also a danger connected with a cultural dictatorship that forces specific ideologies, one of which is the “gender” ideology. “These ideologies obviously feel threatened by Christians and the Church, who speak out against them and therefore their lobby is initiating a campaign of intolerance and discrimination,” emphasized the Intovigne.

ISRAEL: Christian Community Continues to Grow

On the eve of Christmas celebrations in the Holy Land —Dec 25 for Catholics and Protestants and Jan. 7 for Orthodox Christians—the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) released new data on the Christian community in Israel, Ynetreported.

According to the CBS, there are 158,000 Christians living in Israel, constituting 2 percent of the population. This is up slightly from 154,500 last year.
Of the Christian population, 80.6 percent are Arab, primarily residing in northern Israel. Nazareth—the childhood home of Jesus—is the largest Arab-Christian town.
Most of the non-Arab Christians are immigrants from the former Soviet Union who came to Israel with their Jewish families under the Law of Return.
The CBS noted that Arab Christians fared best in terms of education in comparison to all other ethnic groups in Israel. For example, some 56 percent of Arab Christians, compared with 50 percent of Jewish students, 36 percent of Druze students and 34 percent of Muslims, received a high school diploma that met the basic demands of Israeli universities.
Israel is one of the few countries in the Middle East that has seen its Christian community grow. An estimate 100,000 Christians have fled the civil war in Syria, while in Egypt, Christians are fearful of the rise of Muslim Brotherhood. Even in the Palestinian Authority-controlled city of Bethlehem—the birthplace of Jesus—the Christian population has shrunk to a third of the town’s residents, down from 75 percent only a few decades ago.
