Ansar Dine Islamist rebels have taken control of the central city of Konna, situated northeast of Mali’s capital, moving further into government-held territory.
The capture of Konna is a significant advance for Mali rebels. There have been no official comments yet from the Mali army.
The rebels identify with a strict version of Islam and have already occupied the vast desert of northern Mali, making good use of a power vacuum after the last democratically elected president was overthrown in March.
