The ancient Greek monastery at Soumela (founded 386), now only a tourist attraction after the population exchanges of 1923, the holy things and the wonderworking icon of the Mother of God “of Soumela” were transferred to New Panagia Soumela Monastery, on the slopes of Mount Vermion, near the town of Naousa in Macedonia.
9 November 1931 following conversations of the governments of Greece and Turkey (Venizelos and Inonou) the monk Amvrosios Soumeliotis visits the ruined monastery of Soumela in Trapezounda and retrieves the holy icon of Panagia Soumela.He brings it along with other church valuables in Athens.In 1951,the holy icon,that had been kept in the Byzantine Museum of Athens,is transferred to the new Monastery of Soumela that was constructed on mount Vermion 92 km west of the city of Thessaloniki in Macedonia,Greece, where it is kept today.
