TUCSON - An unattended candle caused a fire to ignite at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church shortly after midnight.
Located on East Fort Lowell Road, the church is home to Tucson's
annual Greek Festival. Fire crews responded around 12:15 a.m. There was
heavy smoke but no visible flame. As a precaution, one firefighter was
transported to the hospital for showing signs of dehydration while
battling the smoke.
A property manager has estimated damage inside the church to be worth $1 million. The building has been condemned.
