One of the most revered Christian shrines, the Belt of the Holy
Mother of God has finally arrived at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior
in Moscow. More than 200 thousand believers welcome the relict. The
service was conducted by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill.
According to legend, the Mother of God wove the miraculous belt out
of camel wool and wore it until the end of her Earthly days. At the time
of her ascension, she passed the belt on to Thomas, the Apostle.
Currently, the relic belongs to the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos
in Greece. The belt was brought to Russia on October 20 and has already
been shown in St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Norilsk, Vladivostok,
Ussuriysk, Krasnoyarsk, Tyumen, Nizhny Novgorod and Volgograd among
others.
The queue in front of the Cathedral was so long that it took about 7
hours to get into it. 160 warmed buses were standing nearby so that
people could get warm for a while, and 10 chow wagons were offering hot
tea and porridge.
According to an announcement, 52 people have been transferred to
hospital up until now and 384 people were needed to receive medical care
after standing in a line in bad weather conditions to enter the
Cathedral.
