WASHINGTON (DC) – CBS News has learned from the Secret Service that
shots were fired outside Vice President Joe Biden’s home in Delaware
Saturday night.
The house was said to be unoccupied at the time and there were no injuries. The shooting occurred shortly before 8:30 “on a public road outside the established security perimeter,” a Secret Service official told CNN. Biden’s home is reportedly “several hundred yards away from the main road where shots were fired” according to the report.
The Secret Service told CBS News they are investigating the incident, but a spokesman confirmed that a car drove by and shots were fired.
A spokesman told CNN that the shots were heard by a Secret Service agent at the scene and a car was seen driving off at a high rate of speed.
There is no word whether the shooting was targeted or random.

The
vice president was expected to spend the weekend in Delaware. A
spokesperson for Biden says the vice president and his wife were briefed
on the incident on Saturday night.
Thorough searches will be conducted on the outside of Biden’s residence and nearby residences to see if any rounds hit any structure, a Secret Service official separately told CNN. The vice president’s residence is several hundred yards away from the main road from where the shots were fired.
New Castle Delaware County Police are working with the Secret Service to investigate the incident.
“While the incident scene was being searched at approximately [9 p.m.], an individual in a vehicle attempted to pass a New Castle County police officer who was securing the outer perimeter of the area. As a result of the interaction with the officer, this individual was arrested for resisting arrest,” Hoback said.
Right now that person is not tied to the incident.
A Secret Service official told CNN that individual will be questioned regarding the shooting incident to see if he was involved.

(NYTimes) Washington — Several gunshots were fired out of a vehicle speeding by the home of Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. in Greenville, Del., on Saturday night, according to federal law enforcement officials.
Neither the vice president nor his wife were home at the time of the shooting, which occurred around 8:25 p.m., officials said.
Secret Service and the local police were unable to catch the vehicle as it raced away.
It was not clear whether any of the shots hit Mr. Biden’s residence, or even if they were aimed directly at the home, which sits roughly 300 yards back from the road, officials said.
Secret Service agents were beginning to canvass the home looking for bullet marks on Sunday morning. There was no immediate explanation for a possible motive.
“The
Secret Service is working closely with the New Castle County Police on
investigating this incident,” said Edwin Donovan, a spokesman for the
Secret Service.
Less than an hour after the shooting, a man in a vehicle tried to drive past a police officer who was securing the area around the vice president’s home. The man resisted arrest, officials said, but was taken into custody.
A test for gunpowder residue performed on the man’s hands was negative, according to a law enforcement official. The man will be “questioned regarding the shooting incident last night to determine if he was involved in any way,” the official said.

According to the New York Times, New Castle County police and Secret Service agents were unable to catch the shooter as he or she sped away.
During the subsequent investigation, a car reportedly sped past agents and was pulled over.
The driver's hands tested negative for gunpowder residue.

Biden's
neighborhood includes stately stone-and-brick homes along a curving
two-lane road that winds through rolling hills. Nestled in a heavily
wooded area, the vice president's home is not visible from the main
road. A small cottage, occupied by the Secret Service, sits on the
property near a gate in front of the driveway that is blocked off by
Secret Service vehicles and personnel.
Police
said there was a report of shots fired in the nearby area of Hoopes
Reservoir, just northwest of the Biden home. The reservoir is a source
of fresh water for Wilmington.
Biden's
office said the vice president and his wife, Jill Biden, were briefed
Saturday night, as was President Barack Obama. Biden's office referred
all other questions to the Secret Service.
On Sunday
afternoon, half a dozen sport utility vehicles were parked near the
entrance of the Bidens' property, providing a heavy security presence in
the area. Shortly before 2 p.m., a motorcade of several more SUVs
arrived at the house. It was unclear whether the vice president was in
any of the vehicles.
Biden
planned to speak Monday in Wilmington at the Organization of Minority
Women's 31st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast.
The
Bidens spend many weekends at their Delaware home, and, while he served
in the Senate, Biden frequently made a daily commute from Delaware to
Washington by train.
