Israeli archaeologists today announced they have discovered the first evidence supporting the biblical references on the existence of Bethlehem centuries before the city was developed into a sacred place, as the birthplace of Jesus.
The proof is a clay seal found near the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, in which three rows are engraved in ancient Hebrew text script. This text contains the word "Bethlehem". According to the archaeologist of the Israel Antiquities Authority Eli Choukri, the stamp shows that the city was hundreds of years before recorded as the birthplace of Christ. "For all the stories of Bethlehem in the Bible, there is now evidence that there was such a city and not just a myth, "he said.
The seal was probably placed in a silver or load agricultural products sent as a tribute from the king in Bethlehem of Judea. It is estimated that dates to the 7th or 8th century BC and has a diameter of 1.5 cm.
Bethlehem is first mentioned in the Old Testament book of Genesis, as the place where Rachel was buried, the wife of the patriarch Jacob. According to the New Testament in this city, now in the West Bank, south of Jerusalem, Jesus Christ was born.
