Another Greek product is now officially recognized by the EU as a product of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The Mandarin of Chios, a special type of mandarin cultivated on the Northern Aegean island of Chios, is the 97th Greek product included in this list and also a product of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
The Mandarin of Chios belongs to the citrus deliciosa tenore variety and it is very different from the common clementine mandarin, citrus reticulata, with a most intense flavor. The recognition of the brand name will help the farmers of the remote Greek island succeed in getting better prices for their products, and will ensure consumers buy high quality fruit.
From now on, all fruit that bears that name should be produced, cultivated and gathered inside the geographical area of Chios, Psara and Oinouses. The Mandarin of Chios is used as the basic ingredient in a wide variety of products such as jams, juice and sweets. Its oils can be uses in bakery, the cosmetic industry and some of its by products are excellent food for milk-producing animals.
