Eating Greek: Pasadena Greek Fest

Did you know that some actively producing olive trees in Greece were planted over seven hundred years ago—in the thirteenth century?
You may not be surprised  that 7% of the marble produced in the world comes from the Hellenic Republic, but did you know that Greece is the leading producer of sea sponges?

Greece also has no navigable rivers because nearly 80% of the country is mountainous, which leads to a funny story…

Come celebrate everything Greek this weekend at the 55th Annual Pasadena Greek Fest. Naturally, a major draw will be Greece’s specialty foods, such as keftethes, loukaniko, octapodi, tamara, and skordalia. Transaltion: meatballs, pork sausage, octopus in tomato sauce, Greek caviar, and garlic dip. Of course, they’ll also have more recognizable favorites like Greek salad, gyros, dolmathes, baklava, moussaka, and spanakopita.

A day celebrating all that is Greek would not suffice if music was not prevalent and ongoing. The Olympians will be onstage, as well as special guests from Greece, and various dance groups will perform.
There will also be olive tastings, cooking demonstrations, a mythology “presentation,” and lectures on the Greek language, and Byzantine art and architecture. For a breather, send the kids off to the kid zone, which appears to have a multitude of inflatables, and visit the favorite watering hole—the Olympic Taverna Sports Bar & Cigar Lounge.

The Pasadena Greek Fest was founded in 1958 by members of St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Church. All proceeds from the weekend will fund cultural, educational, and community outreach programs (including Kids ‘n’ Cancer, Los Angeles Youth Network, and Union Station Homeless Services) sponsored by St. Anthony Parish.
