The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church will host its 2013 annual
Cross Dive event on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Banks Channel in front of the
Blockade Runner Beach Resort.
The event starts at 11 a.m. with the participation of clergy and
laity members from surrounding Orthodox parishes. It will be followed by
a picnic fellowship fair at Wrightsville Beach Park.
The event is open to the public, and everybody is welcome to attend.
This event is an old tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church that takes place throughout the world at ports, lakes or rivers in areas where a Greek Orthodox church exists. In many places, it attracts a lot of church members, spectators and media coverage.
During the event, the parish priest offers a service for the blessing of the waters for the whole year. At the end, he throws a cross into the water and church youth members dive to retrieve it. The tradition has it that the youth member that retrieves the cross first will be blessed for the whole year!
This well attended event additionally commemorated the Universal Exaltation of the Holy, Precious and Life-Giving Cross of our Lord Christ, which took place in 326 A.D.
