A German embassy employee has been shot dead and an aid agency worker kidnapped in separate attacks in Yemen.
Officials said both incidents bore the hallmarks of al Qaeda.
The shooting involved a German embassy security guard as he was leaving a supermarket in the capital Sanaa.
One witness described what had happened:
“ Three unidentified men walked into the supermarket and followed a man for about ten minutes. He came out with a trolley containing shopping. They then fired at the supermarket’s security guards before running inside, so the man confronted them alone. They shot him in the chest and head and then they fled.”
Later kidnappers seized an African employee of the children’s agency UNICEF.
Germany was one of several Western countries which shut their Yemen embassies in early August after a U.S. warning of a possible major militant attack.
