Celebrated by the Orthodox Church on October 26, the Great Martyr
Demetrius the Mhyrrh Streamer, is the Greek city of Thessaloniki patron
saint.
The Romanian Christian Orthodox Church celebrates St. Demetrius the New, patron saint of Bucharest City, each year on October 27. His relics are kept at the Patriarchy Cathedral in the city.
According to the old traditions, the holiday of Saint Demetrius marks the end of pastoral summer, as it is named the Samedru or the Day of Terms, as this day was the day all the issues, tenancies, loans, seasonal jobs and other agreements settled six months ago, at Sangiorz (Saint George, April 23rd) were solved, and new deals were signed.
On this occasion, the Romanians light fires in their backyards, and children jump over the flames to become healthy or the young to get married.
