Turkish newspaper Sabah reports that Turkey has made a request for
the transport of historical, miraculous icon of Panagia Sumela from
Vermio to Trabzon.
Specifically the Mayor of Matschke region in Turkey, Ertugrul Genc,
requested the icon to be transferred for this year, from the monastery
of Panagia Sumela –or "Sumela Manastir" as the Turks call it- in Vermio,
to Trabzon.
The mayor of the region Matschke, Mr Ertugrul Genc said that they have already initiate the procedures in order to bring the icon of Panagia Sumela in Trabzon for this year's Easter Service.
"Actually, we wanted Easter Service to take place here, but it didn't happen. Then, we initiated the procedures for the transportation of the Panagia Soumela icon, here. We contacted the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. We will mention the issue to Patriarch Bartholomew. We want the icon to be transferred here during this year's Easter Service and to display it for the people. Its home is here".

The icon of Panagia Sumela with Christ , was painted by St. Luke since decades is located in the Monastery of Panagia Sumela in Bermio mountain.
This icon is miraculous. Believers say that protects people from serious diseases and evil spirits. Every year millions of people visit the monastery to see the icon.
Sabah supports "that priests who left the area during the exchange in 1923 buried along with various sacred vessels and the icon in the church of St Barnabas. After discussions between the Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos and the Prime Minister of Turkey Ismet Inonu on October 22, 1931 the icon that was taken by Father Amvrosios, one of the last monks of Panagia Sumela monastery, was exposed for 20 years at the Benaki Museum in Athens. "
