Tbilisi, - The Georgian Patriarchate believes that an initiative of the Identity non-governmental organization, which defends LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) rights, to set up a shelter for homeless children in Tbilisi is dangerous.
"Naturally, there is a danger that these "child minders" will encourage such a way of life. It is also highly probable that underage children may be persuaded to embrace these principles, which will be a violation of children's generally recognized right - the right to private life. What may happen is unacceptable both for the church and all of society," according to the statement.
Identity has staged a number of actions in Tbilisi condemning violence against LGBT community members. In early November, the organization proposed setting up a shelter for homeless and underprivileged children. It also opened a bank account for donations to fund this project.
