Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church,
605 Washington Ave., is celebrating its 98th anniversary with an open
house and international food festival from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.
The celebration will start with a brief church service open to all. This service will be offered for the health, well-being and healing of all who attend. Archpriest Father James Parsells will anoint all with holy oil from the relics of a saint.
The Children’s Choir will perform Orthodox hymns from the many languages represented in the parish. Tours of the church and its extensive iconography will be ongoing throughout the afternoon.
The international food festival will begin at 3 p.m. with homemade foods from Russia, Poland, Georgia, Greece, Romania, Italy and the Middle East. For one price of $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 5-12 (children under 5 are free), visitors could enjoy tastings from many cultures.
Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church was established in Manville in 1911. Immigrants from Russia and other Eastern European cultures found comfort in worshipping in a familiar setting. Today, the church serves Orthodox Christian faithful from all backgrounds and ethnicities. The structure is richly adorned in the Orthodox tradition with icons on all of its walls and ceilings, intricate stained glass windows and fragrant beeswax candles in the candle stands. Much of the services are sung, creating an experience that invokes all of the senses.
Divine liturgy is celebrated every Sunday morning and on Feast Days at 9:30 a.m. Saturday evening Vigil services are at 5:30. Ss. Peter and Paul’s redesigned website, www.ssppoc.org, has information regarding the church and the services.
