The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople has denied rumors that Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, who holds a primacy of honor in Eastern Orthodoxy, is a Freemason.
“The Ecumenical Patriarchate hereby assertively denounces that His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has any relation whatsoever with Freemasonry,” the Patriarchate said in a brief statement.
Some Orthodox who are critical of the Patriarchate’s participation in ecumenical dialogue have long accused Patriarch Bartholomew I (1991- ) and his predecessors Athenagoras I (1948-72) and Demetrios I (1972-91) of being Freemasons.
