CNN reporter Ivan Watson was recently detained by police on-air during a live report from Turkey. Well, now the prime minister of Turkey has commented about Watson in particular, calling him a “flunky” who’s just posing as a reporter.
Watson was detained and held for 30 minutes, after which he tweeted that they were skeptical of his press credential because “many are counterfeited.”
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan called out Watson specifically for posing as a journalist. He called Watson a “flunky,” and said that in general, “The international media that came to Istanbul and made exaggerated, provocative calls were licking their paws.” And he threw a strong accusation Watson’s way regarding the CNN reporter’s true motives.
“He was caught red-handed. These people have nothing to with a free, impartial, independent press. These people are literally executing their duties as agents. That’s why they are here.”
