The Russian Orthodox Church sent Ukrainian refugees more than 75 million of rubles (near 1,5 million of dollars) during last 9 months, Russian media reports.
"Last summer we organized the center of help for civilians of Ukraine. By April, 24, 2015 we received more than 20,000 appeals from refugees," stated Vladimir Legoida, Chairman of the Synodal Informational Department of the Russian Orthodox Church.
He also noted that the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, held on Tuesday in Moscow, touched the issue of humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees.
"The Holy Synod decreed to call dioceses, monasteries, parishes and laity of the Russian Orthodox Church to further help civilians, affected by the armed conflict in Ukraine," said Legoida.
The United Nations Office report for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted that according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) registered more than 800 thousand Ukrainians had sought asylum, residence permits or other forms of legal stay in neighboring countries. This includes 659,143 individuals in Russia and an additional 81,023 individuals in Belarus.
